Hey guys, I've been looking for more new, good books to read, especially historical, so I thought I'd start a thread for book reviews. This is my first one.
The Mysterious Benedict Society - An odd advertisement in the newspaper draws children of all ages and sizes to take an unusual test. Only four exceptional kids are selected to go on the adventure of a life time, which they really don't think they are prepared for in the least. But actually, their various talents and even faults make them perfect for this perilous job. Encountering danger, buckets, spies, whispers, ceiling vents, and even hidden pasts, these four extraordinary children embark on a quest to save the world. Literally.
This book is great, and so are the two sequels and the prequel. Actually, personally the prequel is my favorite. How can it not be with a title like The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict?

I am reading this book right now. It's called Brothers At Arms
Brothers At Arms - Twins Lawrence and Chester are about as opposite as two people could be. Lawrence prefers the safety and comfort of his study, among his books and papers, while Chester longs for adventure and chivalry, and acts of bravery. When Chester ropes Lawrence into coming with him as a bodyguard for a wealthy Spaniard, life takes many unexpected turns. Join the brothers as they fight through a mystery involving kidnappings, pirates, hidden treasure, and a beautiful Spanish girl named Pacarina who's guarding a priceless secret. But will the brothers learn to overcome their own strivings and turn from brothers at arms to brothers in arms? Will their tension with each other result in horrible circumstances for them both?

I really like Brothers At Arms. Have you read The Boy Colonel by the same author? He wrote a third book mixing characters from Brothers At Arms and The Boy Colonel, but it's out of print and so is really expensive. I've been able to get my hands on it yet.

I have read the Boy Colonel, and the other one, The Secret of the Lost Settlement. I can lend it to you if you want; we own it! Warning, not for queasy stomachs and I would recommend not for anyone younger than twelve. It has ummm...well I can't tell you without revealing some of the book plot, but it has customs that you would find in ancient civilizations. So, yah, not for the weak of heart. If you want I can bring it to church.

Actually, I just bought The Secret of the Lost Settlement because I checked (I do that every now and then with expensive books) and there were a few used books for a good price...that happens every now and then. Or else I'd take you up on your offer and borrow it.

Ok, that's good. Now you have one more book to add to your massive collection. How can that be bad?

It's not bad at all. How can you think of such a thing? Two historical fiction/Christian books I really enjoyed are Flame of Resistance (WWII) and The Sentinels of Andersonville (Civil War) by Tracy Groot. One note of warning, Flame of Resistance is for a more mature audiences...how did you put it: 'probably not for those under 12'. This is due to one of the MCs being a prostitute. The position is not glorified in any way nor presented as right. Neither are there any details or sensual scenes. But that's what did happen in France, when some girls had to find a way to support themselves during the war...
