I'm rewriting a fairy tale about Rapunzel and am trying to figure out her hair. I don't have to have my retelling exactly like the original story, of course, and I fully intend to change some things and add twists of my own. However, I need to figure out something with Rapunzel's hair, or to stand in for it. It's unnatural for hair to grow as long as hers, and even if it did, any reasonable girl would cut it. I mean, can you imagine trying to take care of that much hair? So I either need a good reason for her to have long hair and to keep it, or I need to find something else which I could add into the story instead of her long hair, if that makes any sense; perhaps some hair-like reed she weaves rope from or something. Any ideas?
(Oh, and a bit of backstory to give you the setting. This takes place in a fantasy land. The 'prince' is her twin brother who she was separated from at birth...the bad guy wanted the firstborn but the mother had twins and gave him the daughter, the second-born, instead. Also, either the brother or the twins together have some sort of power which has to do with singing which probably has to do with finding some sort of weapon which is why the bad guy wants them in them in the first place. Any ideas of how they get this power and what exactly in entails? Oh, and the Fruit of the Spirit theme for this is 'Joy'.)

Perhaps the bad guy has forbidden her from cutting it? Because the prophecy mentions a child with golden hair, and since she has no power that he can tell, he thinks perhaps her hair has something to do with it and it just hasn't grown in yet (her power, I mean)? Are you going to have her name be Rapunzel? Because if not, I might have another idea

I don't really want to have her name be Rapunzel. I haven't decided for sure, but I think I'll change it.

What if a mysterious person (a fairy or something of that nature) gave her a tiny magical rope at birth that grew with her? The bad guy is scared to destroy it because he thinks it might have something to do with her power that he wants, but it also makes him nervous because he's scared it will eventually grow long enough for her to escape the tower. [Have you ever read The Three Weavers? There's something kind of like that in there- the girls receive looms from Clotho (I'm not exactly sure who that is- some kind of great weaver or something) that will grow with them, golden thread that will multiply as they grow, and on the loom they must weave a garment that matches the stature of a prince, and the garment will fit him exactly when he comes for it.] Anyway, something that might help you figure out where they got their power is to figure out how the bad guys found out about it. Also, as far as the power, maybe one of the twins could have bitterness problems, so when he/she sings the power doesn't work; but the other one, who is joyful despite their circumstances, sings, it will work. Just an idea since the theme is joy.

That's a really good idea about the joy theme. I'm planning on doing something like that, but am still working out the details. I like the idea about the rope too, though I'm not sure if it will fit in this story. Hmm...have to look into that.
